One of My Favorite Moments

By Soni’s Spark Shack

It was a quiet afternoon, just on the outskirts of Spearfish, South Dakota. The kind of day that feels like it was borrowed from a dream—where time slows and the world around you hums with gentle magic.

I was with my best friend, the one who feels like home, even in the wild. We had wandered onto a hiking trail that had long since stopped caring about maps. The path was overgrown—like nature had decided to take it back, one wildflower and tangled blade of grass at a time.

The grass brushed against our legs, tall and green, swaying in rhythm with the breeze. It wasn’t loud—just enough movement to make you feel like the Earth itself was breathing beside you. Every so often, we’d spot little tucked-away patches of flowers—unexpected bursts of yellow, purple, and soft white—hiding in the green like secrets meant just for us.

There was no traffic. No phone buzzing. No voices except our own, and even those were quiet. The only soundtrack was nature: birds calling in the distance, the slow whisper of wind through the trees, and the steady rise and fall of crickets. It felt sacred. Like we’d stumbled into a world that only reveals itself to those willing to slow down and listen.

The air smelled like fresh rain and spring—earthy and clean, with that sharp, green scent that only happens when life is fully awake. Every breath felt like renewal.

I remember thinking: If peace had a place, this might be it.

And we didn’t rush. We didn’t need to. We just walked, two souls wandering under a wide South Dakota sky, being held by a moment that asked for nothing—just our presence.
