Thoughtful Thursday

My Brain Is Basically a Cat at 2 AM

Ever feel like your thoughts just… take off like a cat with the zoomies at 2 AM?

One minute you’re focused.
The next? You’re emotionally under the couch, reliving something cringey you said in 7th grade, wondering if your plants are mad at you, and Googling “do owls have knees?” at 3:12 AM.

Yeah… that’s my brain.

Honestly, I’m starting to think I was a philosopher in a past life. Or maybe just a cat—equal parts nap queen and chaos gremlin.

But here’s the real talk:
That mental “zooming” isn’t just randomness. For me, it’s also shaped by something deeper: CPTSD and PTSD.

Let’s unpack that—gently.

PTSD can show up after a single traumatic event—like a crash, injury, or frightening experience.
CPTSD (Complex PTSD) often comes from long-term or repeated trauma, especially in childhood—like growing up in a stressful environment or not having the safety or support you needed.

When you’ve lived through that, your mind learns to stay on high alert.
You overthink. You prep for worst-case scenarios. You analyze every interaction like it’s a final exam.

It’s not about being dramatic.
It’s about being wired for survival.

So what do I do when my inner cat brain won’t settle?

Well…
I draw (even if it’s messy),
I journal (sometimes just a word and a doodle),
I read, I walk, I move, I stretch, I breathe.
I do yoga—even when I wobble, fall, or look like a confused flamingo.
I meditate—even if my brain starts planning dinner halfway through.
And I exercise—not because I love sweat, but because it clears the clutter in my head.

Do I feel silly sometimes? Yep.
But I’d rather feel silly and steady than stuck in survival mode.

So if you ever find yourself spiraling over everything and nothing,
Be gentle with your brilliant, overprotective brain.
Try something creative.
Move your body.
Let the spark back in.

You’re not broken.
You’re just a magical little cat navigating a sometimes loud, unpredictable world.

And you’re doing better than you think.

What helps you quiet the chaos?
Tell me in the comments—or just smile quietly and do your thing today. That counts too.
